Who would have thought you can have a bible lesson with toilet papers rolls? This activity gets kids to use their imaginations and engage in bible stories. To make the characters they have to know the bible story pretty well. They are not just reading or listening to the stories, They are memorizing them. This is an exciting and easy way to teach them about hiding God's word in their hearts. Not to mention tons of fun! Kids love movement especially my kids. Kids learn better using a hands on approach when learning. With Seth and Lily I have to do a hands on approach for nearly everything. What better way to teach them the bible. Every kid will love this activity. Lets get started!
What you will need:
Toilet paper rolls
Here are some more items that can make it more fun but are completely optional.
Getting started
Here is what happen when I did this with my kids. I ask them what bible story they wanted to do. Lily said she wanted to do Daniel and the lions den. I know she had heard this story before so I asked her to tell the story. She did it good. When she started making things she asked if she should make Daniel happy or sad. She said that she didn't know because he could have been sad when he was first put in there. Then explained how he would be happy when he realized God answered his prayers to save him from the lions.
Lucy wanted to do the "baby Jesus" story. I went over the story with her. She said the mommy and daddy needed to be married. I explained that God told Joseph to take Mary to be his wife, they were married. Later she tried to take one of Lily's lions. I told her that lions were not in her story. She got upset. A little later she perked up and said I can make a donkey! So Emma helped her make a donkey. Later Lucy said she wanted to do a bible story with more kids. I told her the story about Jesus saying to let the little children come to him. We would have done it but we ran out of toilet paper rolls. We are definitely going to be doing this story next time.
Seth chose David and Goliath. He knew the story very well. While we were making it he said Goliath needed armor, sword, and shield. So we made it. When we were making David he said to make him with a belt to carry a pouch for his stones. He also said that we needed to make the "rock thrower thing." I explained it was a sling shot. We made one. He told me we needed 5 stones. I did my best to make 5 stones. He was excited to use them and make Goliath fall down. I couldn't get him to tell the story till He was able to act it out with what we made. He definitely is a hands on learner. Later he started getting one of Lily's lions too. I told him there was no lions in his story. He stood up and said "David did fight a lion and killed it." He made a completely different he heard from the bible.
Emma did Moses in the basket. She knew the story good too. She even reminded me that Moses real sister Miriam was watching from the river bank. Emma was never done making things for her scene. When everyone else was done playing Emma kept improve everyone's scene. She said Joseph from Lucy's scene needed a beard. So she made him one. As I mentioned before she made Lucy a donkey. She said that she wanted to make Moses real mother when she put him in the water. She made her then acted out when she put him in the water.
After everyone was done they were all talking about the stories to each other. Emma asked why Bethlehem where Jesus was born was called the city of David. I explained that Jesus came from the line of David. To put it in a way they could understand I said great great great great...Grandfather. The kids loved doing this so much. They were asking questions about the story they chose and other ones they thought of while doing this project. They even made a few different scenes till we ran out of toilet paper rolls. If you do this be sure to have lots and lots of toilet paper rolls available to let their imaginations go! I would love to hear how your kid(s) did with this project. Leave a comment below!
My Sunday School girls will love this craft. I can't wait to try it.
